Heat and Flame Resistant Cords and Cables

Whitney Blake's FIRE-TUFF® is the industry's first 500ºF fire-related flexible cable and cord. FIRE-TUFF® cables, cords, and assemblies are not only fire retardant, but self-extinguishing.

Whitney Blake patented FIRE-TUFF® in 2014. These high temperature cables and cords meet the standards set by the National Fire and Protection Association; exceed the UL FT1 flame test; and are used in the communication systems that firefighters and first responders rely upon.

A special high flex alloy conductor retains electrical continuity after 200,000 bend flex cycles. A unique blend of thermoset polymers not only provides heat and flame resistance but also prevents cable strain, while a superior bond over mold ensures a tight seal against water at the interfaces. The thermoset cable jacket resists coil sag and memory loss in critical high temperature situations and provides UV resistance. An overall shield provides protection from electromechanical interference (EMI) to promote the clarity and integrity of communication signals.

FIRE-TUFF® is suitable for any application where high temperatures are a factor.

The test in this video is a simulation showing the flames and high temps that firemen endure in fires.

Our cables and cords can withstand flames and high temps of 815 - 1150 degrees Celcius ensuring that communications systems used by firemen and first responders remain fully functional.

Features

  • Special high flex alloy conductor retains electrical continuity after 200,000 bend flex cycles without loss of electrical continuity.

  • Heat resistant primary insulation and custom formulated cable jacket maintains functionality after repeated intermittent exposure to 500ºF for at least 5 minutes.

  • Cable strain relief is made from a unique blend of thermoset polymers providing heat and flame resistance as well as a water tight seal to the cable.

  • Unique thermoset cable jacket resist coil sag and memory loss in critical high temperature situations.

  • Flame resistant cable exceeds UL FT1 flame test.

  • Waterproof UV resistant cable jacket.

  • Superior bond of over mold to cable jacket ensures a water tight seal at cable over mold interface.

  • Overall shield provides EMI protection to help communication signal clarity and integrity.

  • High temperature cable strength members provide durability and ruggedness at elevated temperatures.

Case Study

Challenge:

When firefighters suit up, they use portable communications equipment. When they are inside a burning, smoke-filled building, they rely on that equipment to call for help, direct water flow and keep in contact with the rest of the team.
Most of the equipment is shielded by the firefighter's protective gear. However, the microphone and its connecting coiled cord are outside the clothing, exposed to high heat and flames and likely to fail.

Solution:

Whitney Blake invented FIRE-TUFF® heat resistant, flame retardant, self extinguishing cables and cords for portable communications equipment. These cables and cords maintain functionality after repeated exposure to temperatures as high as 500ºF. They ensure that firefighters and first responders remain in constant contact with their teams – keeping everyone safe.
